To all new MA Students at the English Department:

The Department of English and American Studies currently offers two Master Programmes:

Anglophone Literatures and Cultures and
English Language and Linguistics

Requirements for admission to the departmental MA programmes

a) An undergraduate degree in English Studies from an internationally recognised university  AND

b) Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of their written and spoken English skills (English language proficiency at level C 1 - CEFR). The following are acceptable:

either  

  • a degree from a university in an EU/EEC member state and Switzerland which was taught completely in English
    OR
  • official results of one of the following proficiency exams (not older than 3 years):
    - TOEFL: ibt (internet-based): 110 minimum; "Paper:" 627 minimum
    - IELTS: Overall Band Score: 8 (minimum of 7.5 per component)
    - Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Grade A
    - Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): minimum Grade C

Please note that all application documents should be submitted to the Central Admissions Office, and not be sent to the Department. After having been processed by Admissions, relevant documents will be forwarded to the Director of Studies at the English Department who will take a decision on the suitability of candidates for an MA programme.

Please note that due to the large number of admissions every year, the procedure usually takes months to complete. Please apply as early as possible and send the documents by fast and registered mail to the central Admissions Office - Zulassung.
