Univ.-Prof. Dr. Igor MAVER

Professor of  English and American Literature


Research interests and teaching experience:

Australian and Canadian literature, English romanticism, William Shakespeare, diasporic Anglophone literatures, postcolonial literary theory and literature, contemporary British poetry, American 20th century fiction.


Positions held:

Since 2001 a Full Professor of English and American literature in the Department of English at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and Head of its Literature Section. Since 2004 Head of the North-American Studies PhD Programme at the Faculty of Arts.
During 2015/16 a Visiting Professor of British literature at the University of Vienna.



Graduated in English and French languages and literatures and obtained his MA degree in British literature at the University of Ljubljana. After doctoral research at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, he received his PhD at the University of Ljubljana with the international board of examiners in 1990. He taught English literature at the University of California at Davis and for one semester as  a Fellow at the University of Sydney. He received several prestigious research awards (the Robert Schuman  Foundation Award, Canadian government research grant, the Royal Society of Edinburgh Award, Australian government research grant, etc). He has been the lead researcher in the bilateral and multilateral international research projects on the various aspects of English literature in cultural contact and cultural mediation of literature.


Memberships in international organisations and editorial positions:

-  elected a full member of The Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea) in London (2013), The European Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Letters.

- on the editorial board of the scientific journal Journal of Language, Literature and Culture (AHCI), published by Maney Publishing in Great Britain, the official journal of Australasian Universities Language and Literature Association.

- Editor-in-Chief of the international scholarly cultural and literary studies journal published in English Acta neophilologica (University of Ljubljana), Scopus et al. indexed.

- a member of the editorial board of the interdisciplinary cultural studies journal TransPostCross, published by the University of Bologna.

- a member of the international editorial board of  the scientific journal Lingue e Linguaggi,  published by the University of Salento.

- an international member of the national Italian committee for the promotion into Full University Professors of English for the Republic of Italy.

- a member of IAUPE (International Association of University Full Professors of English), elected to its International Executive Board in 2015. Co-convenor of a workshop at the July 25-29 2016  conference in the Senate House of the University of London, http://www.ies.sas.ac.uk/ies-conferences/IAUPE2016.
