Language Test for Students Starting Off

Admission to the course Integrated Language and Study Skills 1 (ILSS1) is subject to your performance on a standardised language test - the Vienna English Language Test (VELT) -, which was developed at the Department of English and tests advanced reading skills, vocabulary and grammar by means of multiple choice items.

-> What is VELT about? (sample questions)

-> Preparing for VELT (tips & recommendations)

English language skills at (upper) B2 level ("Independent User") according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) are expected. B2 is the language level required by the Austrian upper secondary school-leaving examinations for the first foreign language.

All BA students, including native speakers of English, have to take this test before they can register for ILSS1.

The test is held only at the beginning of the semester (which means, either late September or beginning of October, and late February or beginning of March, respectively), and the test results will be valid for three semesters.

Students who have passed the Vienna English Language Test will be admitted to Integrated Language and Study Skills 1, provided they have also completed the introductory study phase (STEOP) (registration for ILSS1 via U:SPACE is necessary).

Students who have failed the test will have to retake it the following semester (there is no limit to the number of resits). While a pass grade is required for admission to ILSS1, it is not a prerequisite for taking any of the STEOP courses. For administrative reasons, inspection of examination records is impossible.

Date of the next Vienna English Language Test (beginning of WS 2017/18):

Friday, 28. February, 2014
26.02.2018, scheduled to start at
10:00, 11:00 and 12:00 am

in Lecture Hall AUDI MAX, University Main Building
(Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien)

Candidates will be divided into groups with different starting times (examination time incl. instructions: 60 mins). Starting times will be published on our website i.e. the NEWS section of the Studienservicestelle / Student Office (NOT in U:SPACE!!!) approximately one day before the exam date.

You must bring proof of identity to the test (student card, passport or driving licence).

NB: YOU NEED TO REGISTER FOR THE TEST VIA U:SPACE! (Application to -> Courses/Exams -> "New registration" -> search for "VELT" in the respective semester and "exams" in the drop down menu)

You can find the registration period for the VELT here.

In addition to registering for the exam (i.e. test), do not forget to also register for the ILSS1 course (U:SPACE, registration for courses). Allocation to ILSS1 courses will take place as soon as test exams are available; students who have failed the test will be deleted from the ILSS1 pre-registration lists before the allocation run is started.

The Vienna English Language Test is not an entrance examination but aims to ensure that all students in Integrated Language and Study Skills 1 have achieved (upper) B2 language competence.
